Provincial and Territorial Tourism Satellite Account, 2022
Released: 2026-05-26
Data from the Provincial and Territorial Tourism Satellite Account is now available for 2022.
The Tourism Satellite Account is the internationally accepted framework for measuring tourism activity in an economy. It follows the international guidelines adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission and is rooted in the Canadian System of National Accounts.
Note to readers
The Tourism Satellite Account provides a coherent framework for integrating and analyzing economic statistics related to tourism on both the supply (i.e., industry) side and the demand (i.e., tourist) side. It defines tourism products and tourism industries and has consequently helped shape the development of tourism statistics in Canada and in the provinces and territories.
The Provincial and Territorial Tourism Satellite Account (PTTSA) provides an economic measure of the importance of tourism in terms of expenditures, gross domestic product and jobs for each of the provinces and territories. It allows for comparisons with other industries within a province or territory because the concepts and methods used are based on the standardized and principles-based framework of the Canadian System of National Accounts.
Domestic tourism demand includes spending in a province or a territory by residents of that same province or territory. Interprovincial demand, or interprovincial exports, includes spending in a province or territory by residents of another province or territory. Finally, international demand, or international exports, include spending by international visitors in a province or territory (e.g., Canadian industries are shown as exporting tourism goods and services to those international visitors).
In March 2020, specific travel survey collection activities were suspended due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with operations partially resuming in April 2023. As a result of this suspension, survey estimates were derived by applying growth trends from relevant administrative datasets to the most recent available survey data. This most directly affected international demand within the PTTSA, which incorporates these survey data. As a result, detailed estimates for this component at the provincial and territorial level were modelled and should be used with caution.
