Waste covers discarded materials that are no longer required by the owner or user. Solid waste accounts describe in physical units of measure the supply of wastes by industry and households and their use either as disposal to landfill, incineration, recycling, export, or direct release to the environment. These accounts are treated in section 3.6.5 of the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting: Central Framework (SEEA-CF). Accounting for emissions to water, by industry and household, is also covered in section 3.6.4.
Statistics Canada does not produce a full waste account at this time. Survey data are available to provide a measure of the flows related to solid waste and used water disposal.
