This subsector consists of postsecondary educational institutions classified at the group level as Universities, Colleges, vocational and trade institutions. These institutional units receive financial support from provincial and territorial governments. The funding may take the form of grants, transfer payments, or funding for special purposes, such as the construction of new buildings, repairs to existing structures, or research. With governments frequently imposing accountability requirements on the institutions that receive public funding, the degree of government control over these funding arrangements is an indication as to whether the entity should be classified as an institutional unit in the General government sector.
