  • Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202601000001
Description: Family indebtedness in Canada has risen over the past decade, while immigration has become the principal driver of population and labour force growth. Although previous research has examined wealth accumulation among immigrants, less is known about their indebtedness and financial vulnerability in the post-2016 period. This study uses data from the 2016, 2019 and 2023 Survey of Financial Security. It compares indebtedness among recent immigrant families, established immigrant families and Canadian-born families at comparable stages of the life cycle. Measures include total debt and its components, the debt-to-income and debt-to-asset ratios, indebtedness excluding mortgage debt, short-term credit behaviour, and the prevalence of having no financial wealth.

  • Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202600700002
Description: This study examines disparities between immigrant and Canadian-born families across their wealth distributions, accounting for recency of immigration and life cycle in patterns of wealth accumulation. It examines two questions: are wealth gaps between immigrant and Canadian-born families larger at the lower, middle or upper end of the distribution? And, are there differences in the components of wealth between immigrant and Canadian-born families across the distribution?

  • Articles and reports: 11F0019M2019010
    Description:

While several studies have documented the evolution of the earnings of immigrants in Canada over the last three decades, the evolution of immigrants’ wealth has received relatively little attention. Using data from the Survey of Financial Security of 1999, 2005, 2012 and 2016, this study fills this gap. The study uncovers several key patterns.
